Moving is never something that people look forward to. It might be fun to have a new house or a new office space, but the actual act of moving is labor-intensive and exhausting, unless you know what you are doing.
Here are 11 tips that make packing and relocating easier.
1. Use A Plastic Bin for Some Items
Place the items that you need to get to first in a plastic bin. This helps you differentiate between the important items and everything else and makes it easier for you to see what is inside.
2. Use Clothes Instead of Bubble Wrap
Bubble wrap is a great invention, but it a pricey packing supply for most people. Instead of breaking the bank to get this little luxury, try using t-shirts or other clothing items instead. It will accomplish the exact same thing and won’t cost you a penny!
3. Label Your Boxes Clearly
Not only should you label what is inside each box, but clearly writing which room your box will ultimately end up in will help save you stress later. If you have friends or family members help you move, they will be thankful that they don’t have to guess or open boxes to know where they need to go.
4. Clean Before Moving
Cleaning the house before anyone else arrives and before your boxes are loaded into the new house will save you hassle. Having it pre-cleaned will let you focus on other things and you will not have to worry about wasting your time and energy on cleaning once it’s time to start unpacking.
5. Protect Your Makeup
This might seem like a minor tip, but if you place a cotton ball in your makeup compact, you will be thankful when you keep it from breaking while it is moved to your new home.
6. Saran Wrap Your Toiletries
To avoid leaks and spills, take the lids off your toiletries, place a layer of saran wrap over the top and then seal the lid back on.
7. Stack Your Plates Like Records
Most people want to stack their plates in a box the same way you would in a cabinet, but this might not be the safest option to protect your dishes in the move. Using towels or other protective layers between, stack your plates like records in the box and don’t waste any time worrying about whether they will survive the move – they will!
8. Press and Seal Is Your Best Friend
If you want to keep anything in place during the move, wrap it in press-and-seal and you won’t have to worry about items falling out. This is great for drawers that you don’t want to unpack or for jewelry displays that are easier to keep in-tact instead of throwing in a box where they can get tangled.
9. Keep Baggies Available
When you are taking furniture apart, keep a baggie handy so you can place any hardware that goes with it in a baggie. Tape the baggie to the furniture and you won’t lose anything.
10. Cut Back on Boxes
If you have totes, baskets, or other storage bins, use them for packing instead of buying boxes you won’t need!
11. Best Way to Move a Closet
Instead of folding all your hanging clothes, group them by 10-15 hangers and wrap them in a trash bag. This keeps everything in place and saves box space too!
